Frequently Asked Questions about Intense Pulsed Light Treatment

1. HOW DOES IT DIFFER FROM LASER TREATMENTS?

Both modalities have been widely used in surgery in that both also serve the same purpose of treating skin problems as well as removing unwanted hair. A significant difference between the two is the coverage. Laser beams are narrower and cover small areas at a time. IPL coverage, on the other hand, discharges a broad wavelength range allowing various areas to be targeted concurrently. Also, lasers produce light only of a specific wavelength, whereas the IPL emits a broad spectrum of wavelength for multiple targets. IPL is able to treat all skin types no matter how light or dark including tanned skin. Lasers are restricted to treating lighter skin types only and pose a significant risk of burning to darker skin. Eg mediteranian and above.

2. WHAT AREAS CAN BE COVERED IN THE TREATMENT?

IPL treatments can be performed on all areas of the body except the eye area.

3. HOW MANY TREATMENT SESSIONS ARE REQUIRED?

The number of sessions required for IPL treatments varies. Since a complimentary consultation is conducted before treatment, you will know beforehand your individual course of treatment. Some may even require maintenance treatment once a year. But, typically, we only recommend you to undergo between 8-10 sessions for optimum results.

4. IS THE PROCEDURE PAINFUL?

Basically, it all depends on the individual's pain threshold. It is less painful and more comfortable compared to other modalities because the procedure is fast. For IPL hair removal, hair is not directly pulled off from the follicle. Thus, it is less painful compared to waxing. The active cooling added on the hand-piece also provides comfort during the treatment. The experience is often described as a snapping of a rubber band or some stinging sensation.

5. ARE THERE ADVERSE AFFECTS OF THE IPL TREATMENTS?

Subsequently, most people experience some mild redness and/or warmth of the skin. Although the discomfort can be effortlessly tolerated and does not interfere with your normal activities, you can opt to use cold, wet compresses if necessary. There are also instances that you may experience some subtle crusting or slight scabbing. However, these side effects typically subside over a short period of time. The after-effects of the treatment generally vary from person to person.
