Have you noticed red or bruised thread-like veins and/or papules on your face or your body that do not seem to go away? These are called vascular lesions. And sadly, they do not just go away through a simple facial scrub or topical cream. These numerous blood vessels that are, to a certain extent, visible just under the surface of the skin oftentimes become a source of cosmetic problems especially to most women. Vascular lesions are benign lesions that may come in the forms of small, spider-like facial blood vessels or Telangiectasis, cherry angiomas, port-wine stains and/or neovascularization. These skin blemishes give the skin a red appearance and they occur in various shapes and sizes all over the body, including the face. To some, it may not be that big of a problem, but as a person ages, the skin becomes thinner and these lesions become more and more evident.
Telangiectasis are small, unsightly red or bruise-like broken vessels usually found on the cheeks, nose, upper chest, neck and, in some cases, on other anatomical sites of the body. These broken capillaries are caused by various factors such as obesity, pregnancy, hormonal changes, skin damage, alcoholism and a family history of weaknesses in blood vessels. Cherry angiomas, on the other hand, are small, dome-shaped papules on the skin. These lesions' color range from red to purple and are located usually in the person's torso. Moreover, neovascularization is a proliferation of blood vessels that are not like the usual tissue found in a particular area of the skin. They are basically a byproduct of a wound healing in the skin. Port-wine stains are another type of vascular lesion which appears to be a birthmark made of enlarged capillaries in the skin that are usually found on the face.
These unaesthetic lesions that are not in their correct anatomical site do not simply go away over time. They can be treated through various surgical and non-surgical procedures. Light-based technologies and laser therapies, in particular, can improve the appearance of these vascular lesions.
